Adopted

“In love He predestined us to be adopted into his family as sons through Jesus Christ.”

God says in Ephesians, chapter 1

Isn’t it amazing that in His eternal plan, God chose to adopt us as His sons and daughters in Christ? Giving us more than care and compassion, God has made us His heirs. The Bible says that Christ redeemed us “that we might receive the adoption as sons. . . . And if a son, then an heir of God through Christ” (Gal. 4:5,7). What do we inherit? All the riches of God’s mercy, grace, and love, as well as His presence and His peace. We inherit a relationship with Him now and forever.

What a privilege to be adopted–a child by choice–an heir in the family of God!

adoption – Greek huiothesia: υἱοθεσία, ας, ἡ
Phonetic Spelling: (hwee-oth-es-ee’-ah)
Usage: adoption, as a son into the divine family. https://biblehub.com/greek/5206.htm

Psalm 139:13-18 – God knew us before we were born!

For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.

How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.

Luke 1:40-43 – Mary Visits Elizabeth

…where she entered the home of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

The first time adoption is mentioned directly in the Bible is in Exodus 2. Israel’s great leader who brought them out of captivity and into the Promised Land was adopted. Before Moses was even born, a wicked Pharaoh decreed that all Jewish boys who were born should be thrown into the Nile River.

Esther was adopted by her uncle (Esther 2:7), Mordecai.

Another example of adoption in the Old Testament was the children of Israel. Many times God refers to Himself as their “Father” (Isaiah 1:2; Hosea 11:1). God chose Israel among all of the nations to be a father to them.

In the New Testament we find an amazing example of adoption. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, was adopted by Joseph. Mary’s husband, Joseph, was not Jesus’ true Father. The Holy Spirit was Jesus’ Father (Matthew 1:18). But Joseph took Jesus in as his own.

God defends the fatherless.

Deuteronomy 10:18

Psalm 68:5-6

Caring for orphans is a command.

James 1:27 – Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Romans 8 paints a beautiful picture of our adoption into God’s family. Can you picture this: The papers are signed. Your bags are packed. You are standing at the door of the orphanage. Yes. You are an orphan. But in your heart, today, there is hope. A glimmer of sparkle and beauty around the corner. Your Hope, your family, your Abba is coming!

Romans 8:23 says, “Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.” For this hope we were saved.

Jeremiah 29:11-13

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
